The Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS) of the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) held its semestral Faculty-In-Charge (FIC) Orientation on August 16-17, 2016 at the Audio Visual Room (AVR) at UPOU Headquarters in Los Banos, Laguna.
The two-day orientation had a total of 31 attendees in the first day, and 17 attendees in the second day. Participants from the FIC orientation were faculty members, lecturers, and affiliates from different campuses around the country.
Dr. Primo G. Garcia, Dean of FMDS, delivered the welcome remarks which focused on the role of the FICs in facilitating online learning. “This orientation is part of the Faculty’s thrust to enhance the learning experience of our students through faculty development. It is part of the Academic Productivity Improvement initiative of FMDS,” he said.
Asst. Prof. Rita C. Ramos, Secretary to the Faculty, discussed the roles of the FIC and other administrative matters to orient the new and existing FICs to their functions and responsibilities. Dr. Garcia followed the discussion with an overview of MyPortal, the course site to be used as an online classroom, and the principles of online teaching learning. Prof. Aurora Lacaste talked about and facilitated the workshop on how to update the course content in the course sites. Dr. Garcia discussed the approaches to designing online learning activities. Asst. Prof Ramos handled the workshop on assessment of student performance.
The second day of the FIC orientation included discussions on “Facilitating Learning and Building Community of Learners” by Dr. Primo Garcia, “Preparing the Course Guide” and related group activities by Prof. Aurora Lacaste, “Mainstreaming Gender in Online Teaching and Learning” by Prof. Finaflor Taylan, and other hands-on activities in creating the course site.
